I feel like Alain might be there. He has proven himself against most of the Kalos elite four and multiple legendaries, he is the only rival (from my memory) that Ash never beat, and with Greninja’s return I feel it’s only fitting.

I would actually LOVE to see Tobias in M8. That character needs more depth I think and him being introduced in Journeys as something other than plot device would be so nice.
