The M44 must be fired wearing a heavy overcoat and ushanka.

Was that Harry Potter I saw with the rifle?

The surplus ammo has a steel core, but its not really armor piercing, those have specially shaped tungsten carbide core. The steel cores are banned at my indoor range though...

Like I said before, you have the extremely common Czechoslovakian "Silvertips".

@jodere7 yes and that metal rod going down the side of the gun in this vid is the bayonet
joshrepik (51 minutes ago)
@chimichanga1254 there's no metal rod going down the side of the gun, that's the barrel. if i'm not mistaken they removed the bayonet. and on my mother's boyfriend's m91/30, the bayonet is mounted on the bottom. i don't see why the m44 would be any different? i've disassembled that weapon several times, i never noticed a bayonet.
chimichanga1254 (1 hour ago)
@jodere7 when the bayonet is extended it makes it more accurate because they sighted them in with the bayonets on

First off, the mild steel core was used simply because it was cheaper then using lead in the former com-bloc nations. Second it's not intended as a "penetrator". Any 150-200 grain bullet moving at 26-2900 fps will powder a cinder block. A .44 mag will break one apart.

The M44 didn't come into service untill 1944 by then the war was mostly over. There very small numbers in use by 1943 BUT the M44 itself really didn't make a large starring role in the war. That is why there are so many excellent shape examples of the M44 out there. The M44 came about becuase the infantry that were issued the M38 which didn't have a bayonet said they could fight more effectively with a bayonet in the cities and buildings.

Very cool. Maybe we can get a drive going to buy you a new camera though!

whatever rounds we have are surplus, and it's most definitely steel core. that same day we shot a round into a giant dirt pile out here at the house (you may be able to see it in the background at some point) and they came in a light blue box with a silver stripe on it... if that's of any significance? no idea. actually, my mom's boyfriend has a 91/30 just in the next room with a magnificent scope on it and he modified the bolt himself... beautiful, beautiful weapons.

they're both mosin nagants. the mosin nagant m91-30 was the original russian WWI issue weapon, and the M44 was russia's carbine in WWII. the m91-30 then became mroe of a range/sniper weapon.

those 7.62 by 54 can put a bullet through an engine block too and the ammo is cheap as hell.
