Description
My channel documents my maddening journey into my obsessive hobby endeavors. Currently, I'm deeply involved with microscopy, chemistry, geology, rockhounding, tool prototyping, specialized materials engineering, creating synthetic ruby & sapphire/(corundum), hydrothermal synthesis of pyrite and many more man-made minerals.
I am not the most disciplined chemist, even in the amateur community, but chemistry is certainly exhilerating. I approach geology more from a chemistry perspective because I collect elements from the periodic table. I'm always learning, and I just love exploring the world around me. Queue microscope!
The worst that can happen is failure. Failing is part of life and is inherently more frequent than success, however, failing is necessary and it is truly the only way to learn and to progress if you are really trying to succeed.
Come fail with me!

Bring your setup over and teach me your ways!

Agreed! I didn't think it was possible to make ruby on your own due to aluminum oxide's high melting point of over 2,000C which is around 3,700F! Pretty cool that it is possible to make synthetic ruby at your own home! :)

How do you not have more subscribers? Your channel is just like Cody's Lab, and ElementalMaker, and a lot of the other big Chemistry channels!

You can also reheat them again with oxide side up to smooth out the Ruby

This is pretty cool, and a step in the right direction.

I would suggest doing the process to make sapphire glass or aluminium glass compression of the chromium oxide and aluminium oxide and heath it after you get it to look similar to glassy look after compression via hydraulic pressing then heat it in a vacuum and heat it to max temperature

Can you show the setup you used to do this with your MAPP Oxy torch?

Once you get the maximum temperature drop it to a lower temperature and allow it to maintain a liquid state and add a intermix to grow the boule bigger and better yeld.

Try illuminating them with a green laser pointer. You should get the deep red fluorescence and nice contrast.

I'm fixing to try and make my own useing carbon rods in my welder for the first try, the second try I'm going to try the microwave Transformer.

I'm sorry Matt, but can a synthetic Ruby/Sapphires produce from real ruby/Sapphires crumbles?

How do they look cut/polished?

the first laser was made from synthetic ruby crystal ,why are you making them for? juts for fun or maybe you can polish them into jewels for rings or whatever,,you seem to know a bit about chemistry,,so let me ask you,i was using boric acid and water to make a paste so i can braze steel wires with some silver brazing wire i have,,i was heating the part to a point where something was bubbling into a blob which ended up dripping onto my concrete brick i work over,,once that blob cooled down it looked like a piece of redish orange amber ,kinda has that texture,,do you know what happened?

Not synthetic bud. Its real ruby its just not worth what a natural mined ruby is worth.
