James Horner outdid himself making an epic soundtrack to what is arguably the best Star trek movie of all time.

This Film has stood the test of time. The Soundtrack is absolutely solid. It takes me back to June, 1982 when I was a boy of 12 watching this with family & friends on opening night. Rest in peace: Kirstie Alley, Nichelle Nichols, Lenard Nimoy, James Doohan, and Deforest Kelley, and thank you all for inspiring generations to look towards the future with hope.

With the passing of Kirstie Alley, it seemed appropriate to give this another listen today. Simply epic.

This is the most amazing movie to rewatch in theatres. I saw the 40th anniversary reshowing and it was obviously great. You could hear people sobbing at the end.

This soundtrack made me love movies. I don't usually get affected by celebrity deaths, but this one hurts. Rest in peace, James Horner. And thank you always.

Anyone else watching the movie in their head while listening to this?

I read of Director Nicholas Meyer's comments on how the shoot on Spock's death went. The actors finished the scene- Shatner and Nimoy slumped against the glass. And he as the director yelled cut. Then he looked over at the cinematographer and saw tears streaming down his cheeks. And he looked around the set, and all the hands were weeping. Meyers had to ask himself, "What was I missing here?" It was THAT powerful. Mind you, for the set crew, the scene was not yet set to this music.

Shame none of the newer Trek films have this much emotion & energy to match what's on screen.

But then again, we didn’t actually lose James Horner…he left so much of himself behind…all his diverse, brilliant music…his legacy.

Who else can't stop listening to James Horner today?

The Empire Strikes Back. Glory. Gettysburg. Star Trek 2. The best soundtracks of all time.

Does anyone here know that Horner's score here literally saved the character of Spock? (This is a bit long, but worth it):

At the point in the soundtrack (46:00) when Kirk uses Spock’s suggestion to fight Khan three dimensionally and Enterprise rises from its descent into the Mutara nebula, the violins soaring above the score to mirror the motion of the vessel, may be the finest eight bars of music in this picture. What an incredible experience it must have been to record.

the one and only Khan movie.
