I've played this many times on expert but I only managed to win once (as mongols, as japan it's easy to defend). I actually tried to make sense of some sort of pattern on how you get troops, where they land, where japan prefers to defend or attack but they seem to be inconsistent. After a while you also stop receiving reinforcements even if you continue to make decent amount of pillaging which I am not sure if it's intended or not. For the longest time I thought this campaign was impossible but after managing to win it I just think it's too RNG at times. A lot of the time I am crushing the battles and winning strategic points like bridges on rivers where the enemy comes with like 800 and I got 200 but I easily win and give him great casualties (losing like 20 troops myself while he loses 500). Another major nuisance are the rebellions you have to deal with and one of those in a bad spot at a bad time can simply ruin your chances to win. To my knowledge there's no recorded successful playthrough on expert so far but I'd really like to see one some day.
