1. Isopropyl alcohol. Don't use other kinds of alcohol, they'll likely melt the plastics away.

I'm pretty sure that the 'dust' is ground down plastic. That's also probably why it happens to the left stick more often since it tends to see more use.

Don’t you love spending $70 on a controller that defects only two months after you buy it

The white dust is from plastic wearing down over time. What happens is that the sticks are made from a softer plastic than the casing, and there's a hard edge where the stick touches the casing so the stick grinds down over time and the dust enters the internals.

Both of my pro controllers had this issue. I always take care of my property, so it’s disappointing to see Nintendo’s quality go so downhill in the Switch generation, especially when the cost for accessories is ridiculous.

To clean your left control stick, disassemble the controller and remove the stick cap to completely expose the "stick box", use compressed air to blow out any dust or debris. This should take care of your problems, but feel free to spray just a little bit of compatible grease in there, just a tiny bit though.

When plastic wears down, it usually "releases" this white dust. If you ever used lego technic, then you should know what I'm talking about.

For how much you pay for these damn controllers... it’s ridiculous we have to deal with this. My ps4 controller hasn’t done this ever.

I haven’t had any issues with my controller. I can feel the frustration of people who DO have this issue.

I just bought a new pro controller recently and the left stick broke after a week! Nintendo really needs to fix this problem and give people refunds and it's not that I don't take care of my controllers, I just think it's annoying how Nintendo just let's this pass!

I've had this issue with my Pro Controller. I feel like Nintendo used the wrong plastic for the Controller cover. Transparent plastic is known to be less durable than solid, which is why the control stick seems to grind away at it creating the white dust. Some people will say your too forceful with the stick, don't grind so much, but I don't think this is the case.

Oh my gosh! Before, the L stick wasn’t making complete circles on the Calibrate Control Sticks test at first. But after blowing into the control stick, it made full complete circles and worked like a charm! Thank you!

There are two basic issues you can have. One is "drift" where your controller thinks you are slightly pushing the controller in one direction. You can see this in a game like Mario Odyssey - where the game requires you not touch the stick to warp to a flag. If you can't easily warp to a flag this is your problem. It can be corrected by calibrating from the Switch menu.
