You can technically get it even earlier in the Chalice Dungeons.

When I read early I thought you meant getting it early without having to kill him.

You can also get the burial blade earlier than that by doing chalices. Specifically lower Loran. You just gotta do the ritual and then look up glyphs that will net you the Uncanny Burial Blade.

Smart man, real smart. Thanks for showing this, I don't have the game (well, I don't even have a ps4, actually) but when I get I'm sure as hell going to use this hint. Since I love scythes, this weapon will sure as hell be my companion in NG+ (after a play with it a bit in my last moments in the normal game, of course).

You can actually do this without umbilical cords. You need to quit the game as soon as you get the badge, then reload your save. It will start you right outside of the garden in the dream and you can buy the burial blade, if you missed out on a few of the cords. Entering the garden will just initiate the final cutscene. So long as you quit before the cutscene ends, it won't put you into NG+. :]

Makes sense, they can't force you to fight the boss.  And if they locked down hunter's dream it means people struggling wouldn't be able to grind levels/vials/ammo/etc... if they couldn't win.

The point is that he is able to use the burial blade in the playthrough he is currently in, rather than being forced to go to the ng+, he is probably able to upgrade it more easily this way as well, since he doesn't lose his insight and insight shop items

There’s a legit way to get the weapon early tho. Through chalice dungeons

If you don't use the umbilical cords and you refuse him then you go to a cut seen and the game starts you in ng+. From there you are able to buy the sword.
