I used to call myself "veganish" because I avoided all the things vegans did unless it came down to being exceedingly cautious when it came to hidden ingredients at restaurants, work pot lucks or if eating at someone else's home. I'd allow myself a cheat if on vacation or travelling, because it wasn't as easy to abstain.

You've hit the nail on the head, as an ex-vegetarian, I was lied to, I am pissed about it. Too bad they let the industries change the original meaning of vegetarianism. We will not let them change the meaning of vegan.

Veganism =/= diet

As a former vegetarian, this is accurate. I chose to go vegetarian on my own when I was 5, and my family remained animal eaters. I never knew any other vegetarians so it was already like I was making some "subversive" decision to not eat flesh. It left me in a lazy, unquestioning state.
