i feel like much of his earlier work was written more of like a diary entry. The songs were written with less expectation of an audience, so yea, its going to be incredibly honest and personal. TOD conversely was written with the intent of it being read. if you know someone is going to read what you write, you will write differently. if you want people to understand what you want to express, you're going to express it in a way that you hope can carry the intent. while it may not be as close to the writer, its just a different way of trying to bring the reader/listener closer to the subject

Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales is about a mental breakdown and recovering from it my dude

as someone who leans towards and pays attention to so much more on the mix and musical side of an album, teens of denial hit SO much harder to me then twin fantasy ever could. the sounds, the builds, the chord and melody structure, the quality of the sound mixed with the more pure rock sound plugs into my emotions in a way i cant explain.

Gotta say I just found out that Something Soon lyrics really show how I am feeling about my life. Impressive.

I think your comparison of beach life-in-death and fill in the blank is a bit unfair, only because I think there's a lot more going on than just depression in those 4 Stanzas you bring up from BLID. I think the first two have more to do with identity, and trying to cope with the idea that your idealized partner is and always will be just a fantasy. I think there's a lot on that ideal -- or rather, romancing that ideal in some abstract way -- in Twin Fantasy in general.
